Heading to See the Great Migration

The Great Migration is one of Africa’s most awe-inspiring wildlife spectacles, where vast herds of wildebeest and zebras make their epic journey across Tanzania’s Serengeti into Kenya’s Maasai Mara. This incredible event is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after safari experiences, and we at Crystal Tours and Travel Ltd. receive numerous inquiries about it each year.

For many, the Great Migration conjures up vivid images of wildebeest charging across the river, narrowly escaping the jaws of hungry crocodiles. However, the reality is that the migration spans over tens of thousands of square kilometers, with fewer than two million animals involved. It’s not always about being in the heart of the action, but it’s still a thrilling and rewarding experience.

While it’s rare to witness a full-on river crossing at a specific moment, the migration’s true magic lies in the journey itself. Whether you’re visiting the Mara or the Serengeti between June and September, you’ll be treated to amazing wildlife sightings. Even in later months, such as November, I’ve had some of my most memorable experiences watching the herds. While early months like calving season are quieter in terms of migration activity, the right parts of the Serengeti and Mara will always provide a spectacular view.

I’m especially excited about my upcoming safari, which has been a happy twist of fate. Initially planned for Zimbabwe, the logistics didn’t quite align, so I redirected my plans to Kenya and will be heading to the Maasai Mara this Wednesday. Last-minute bookings always add a sense of adventure to any trip, but with my last-minute confirmation, I’m thrilled that the camps were able to accommodate me!

On this journey, I’ll be staying at Mara Plains Camp, which has received fantastic guest feedback recently. Though my previous stay there felt more like a traditional camp compared to other high-end competitors, the reviews now indicate that Mara Plains surpasses expectations with its service, food, and incredible wildlife sightings. One of the best parts? The camp offers private access to the Mara, ensuring you can experience the action without the large crowds.

Along with Mara Plains, I’ll be exploring other top-tier Great Plains Mara camps, including Nyika Camp and the newly updated Mara Toto Tree Camp. These camps offer a perfect blend of comfort and adventure, letting you enjoy the migration in style.

In addition to the great safari, I’m excited to test out my new Canon R5 Mark II camera. After some mishaps with focusing on my last trip, I’m eager to capture every moment of this safari, confident that my new gear will ensure spectacular photos.
