Discover the Thrill of the UAE’s Most Challenging Hike
The Stairway to Heaven in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, has earned a reputation as one of the most demanding yet rewarding hikes in the region. With a 20-km loop featuring narrow gravel paths, rocky cliffs, and the awe-inspiring peaks of the Hajar Mountains soaring to 1,800 meters, this trek is a true adventure.
For local farmers who traverse these trails daily, this path is essential to life. However, for thrill-seekers, it is an exhilarating challenge that combines breathtaking views with physical endurance. Recent safety improvements, like strategically placed handrails, have made this hike more accessible while retaining its mystique.
Ready for an adventure? Here’s everything you need to know to tackle this epic hike.
The Basics
- Distance: 20 km loop trail or an 8-km Right Bank trail.
- Duration: 6-8 hours for the loop; 5-6 hours for the Right Bank.
- Elevation Gain: 1,800 meters.
- Difficulty: Advanced.
- Location: Ras Al Khaimah, 1 hour 45 minutes from Dubai.
- Cost: Free.
Before You Go
Right Bank vs. Loop Trail
First-timers should consider the Right Bank trail. It is shorter (8 km) and well-marked compared to the challenging 20-km loop, which is steeper and less defined. If attempting the loop trail, it’s best to go with an experienced guide.
Guide or No Guide?
While a guide isn’t mandatory, it’s highly recommended, especially for the loop trail or inexperienced hikers. Professional guides ensure safety and help navigate the route.
Respect Local Customs
The trail passes active villages like Ras Al Ghash at the peak. Dress conservatively to respect local traditions—covering shoulders and knees is ideal.
Best Time to Hike
The best season is October to March, offering cooler temperatures ideal for long hikes. Avoid hiking during summer or in the rain due to extreme heat and the risk of flash floods. A night trek with camping can be an excellent way to beat the heat.
What to Pack
Day Hike Essentials
- Sturdy hiking boots.
- At least 4 liters of water.
- High-energy snacks (e.g., granola, nuts).
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+), sunglasses, and a hat.
- Flashlight or headlamp.
For Camping
- Lightweight tent and sleeping bag.
- Warm layers (it’s cooler at the peak).
- Portable stove (optional).
Getting There

From Dubai:

- Merge onto E11 and turn right onto Al Sayl Road.
- Park at Wadi Ghalilah Dam (2WD) or continue to the trailhead (4WD recommended).
Trail Breakdown
1. Through the Wadi
Start at Wadi Ghalilah. The rocky terrain gradually gains elevation, offering stunning views as the wadi narrows.
2. Villages and Waterfalls
Climb the first set of stairs past abandoned stone buildings. The trail forks here; stay right for the marked Right Bank trail. You’ll pass a dried waterfall and a small pool before reaching the stairs.
3. The Stairs
This iconic section features steep switchbacks with guardrails in some areas. Small shelters along the way provide rest stops and scenic viewpoints.
4. The Summit
The peak features a small farm with panoramic views of the Gulf of Oman. Continue for an hour to the “true” summit or enjoy the breathtaking scenery here.
5. The Descent
The return journey is steep and demands careful navigation. Hiking poles can help reduce strain on the knees.
Camping Tips
Breaking the hike into two days allows you to enjoy a more relaxed pace. Camp in one of the many shelters along the trail, but remember to pack out all your trash and belongings.
