During my week-long car-camping adventure across Oman, I discovered some of the most breathtaking and diverse camping spots imaginable. From serene beaches to towering mountain peaks, these five campsites stood out as my absolute favorites. If you’re planning your own road trip in Oman, make sure to check out these spots—and feel free to pair them with other recommendations from my full week-long itinerary!
1. Bandar al Khairan Viewpoint
- 4WD Needed: No (but recommended for beach access)
- Coordinates: 23.513440, 58.742748
Imagine waking up to sweeping views of turquoise fjords stretching into the Gulf of Oman. Bandar al Khairan Viewpoint offers one of the most spectacular camping vistas in the country. Located just an hour from Muscat, this spot is perfect for the start or end of a road trip.
Why I Loved It:
You can either camp at the viewpoint or venture down to one of the secluded beaches below. The road to the viewpoint is paved, so you don’t need a 4WD unless you want to explore the smaller beaches.
Local Tip:
Nearby, there’s a small village with a grocery store and coffee shop, making it easy to grab supplies. Locals often gather here for sunset, and you might even get invited for traditional Omani coffee (gahwa) and dates.
2. Jebel Shams
- 4WD Needed: Yes
- Coordinates: 23.206165, 57.203428
What could be more epic than camping atop Oman’s tallest mountain? Jebel Shams is a popular spot, offering breathtaking views of Wadi Ghul, known as the “Grand Canyon of the Middle East.” While it’s a favorite among locals and travelers, you can still find quieter spots if you venture slightly off the beaten path.
Why I Loved It:
The campsite I chose had panoramic views of Wadi Ghul and was perfectly positioned for both sunset and sunrise views. Camping here feels like an adventure in the clouds.
Local Tip:
The dirt road leading to the peak requires a 4WD, but the journey itself is an adventure worth taking.
3. Wadi Damm
- 4WD Needed: No (but helpful for deeper access)
- Coordinates: 23.231267, 57.070007
Wadi Damm is an oasis of greenery and turquoise pools, offering a serene escape from the arid landscapes. Camping on the wadi’s dry riverbed is a unique experience, surrounded by lush trees and a tranquil atmosphere.
Why I Loved It:
The pools are perfect for a refreshing swim, and camping here means you’ll have the wadi to yourself in the early morning hours before day visitors arrive.
Safety Note:
Avoid camping here if there’s any chance of rain, as wadis are prone to dangerous flash floods.
4. Pebble Beach
- 4WD Needed: No (but useful for beach driving)
- Coordinates: 22.852035, 59.237917
Pebble Beach lives up to its name with its smooth, round stones that create a unique shoreline. Located just off Route 17, it’s an easy and convenient camping spot with a laid-back vibe.
Why I Loved It:
The bioluminescent plankton that lights up the rocks at night is pure magic! Plus, this campsite is just a short drive from Wadi Shab, making it a great base for an early start to explore the wadi.
Local Tip:
When camping on the beach, pay attention to the tides to avoid waking up in a soggy tent.
5. Sifa Beach North
- 4WD Needed: No (but helpful for driving directly onto the sand)
- Coordinates: 23.443754, 58.780346
Sifa Beach North was my very first campsite in Oman, and it holds a special place in my heart. Nestled between the mountains and the ocean, this spot offers soft, powdery sand and tranquil waves.
Why I Loved It:
The combination of mountain and ocean views is unbeatable, and the quiet atmosphere made it a perfect spot to unwind. Morning swims in the calm waters were the cherry on top.
Local Tip:
Located just an hour from Muscat, this is an ideal campsite to start your Oman adventure.
