The Bat-Eared Fox is a fascinating creature, named after its distinctive large ears that provide a vital advantage in both hearing and temperature regulation. These small foxes are mainly nocturnal, spending their days in burrows and emerging at night or just before sunset to forage. Known for their playful and social nature, bat-eared foxes live in pairs or small family groups, often seen grooming each other or engaging in playful activity during the twilight hours.
One of the most remarkable aspects of bat-eared foxes is their strong family bonds. These foxes mate for life, creating long-lasting partnerships. In some cases, two females may even mate with the same male and share a communal den, though this is less common. Fathers are highly involved in parenting, devoting a significant amount of time to looking after their pups while the mother forages for food.
Bat-eared foxes are exceptional diggers, using their sharp claws to unearth prey hidden underground. They often modify abandoned burrows dug by animals like aardvarks rather than digging their own. Their agility and swift, sharp turns while running have earned them the nickname Draaijakkals in Afrikaans, which translates to “turning jackal.”
In terms of diet, these foxes are primarily insectivores, with insects making up around 80% of their food intake. They are particularly fond of termites and locusts and are often found near termite mounds or following large herbivores such as zebras and antelopes to feed on insects that gather around dung. Their diet also includes rodents, birds, eggs, and occasionally fruits, and they get most of their water from the food they eat.
Bat-eared foxes thrive in open savannahs, grasslands, and lightly wooded areas. While they avoid dense forests and deserts, they have adapted well to farmland, where their insect-rich diet makes them valuable in controlling pest populations.
