Trip Report: Kenya Safari February 2024

Our recent trip to Kenya was nothing short of incredible! While the full trip report is available here, I wanted to share a few highlights and tips, especially for those traveling with kids or looking for specific safari experiences.

Lodging Overview:

  • Offbeat Mara (Mara North)
We stayed at Offbeat Mara and were thoroughly impressed. The camp struck the perfect balance between authentic tented camping and modern amenities. The tents had canvas floors, bucket showers, and minimal lighting but still featured comfortable beds, charging outlets, and WiFi. Manager Jennifer was excellent, and our guide Muli and spotter Benson were fantastic. This was definitely a place we’d return to.
  • Porini Lion (Olare Motorogi)
Our stop at Porini Lion was a bit underwhelming, mostly because it wasn’t the best fit for our kids, who were 6 and 8 at the time. The atmosphere here was more serious compared to the other camps, and while everything was fine, it didn’t quite match the vibe we were looking for. However, the guide Julius and tracker Edward were very skilled and informative.
  • Naboisho Camp (Naboisho)
This was the most luxurious of the camps we stayed at. It felt more like a hotel with solid floors, on-demand hot/cold water, and a mini-fridge in the room. The highlight for our kids was the pool, which helped burn off some energy. Our guide Jackson (whom we’ve had before) was excellent, and we’ve already requested him for our return in 2025. If you’re looking for a more luxurious experience, Naboisho is an excellent choice.

Traveling with Kids:

This was our second time bringing our kids to Africa, and we’ve learned a few things over the years that have helped make our safaris smoother:

  • Morning Routine:
Getting up early for game drives can be tough on kids, but it’s worth it! Convincing them that afternoon siestas are just as important can help balance the early mornings.
  • WiFi & Electronics:
It’s hard to admit, but good WiFi can be a lifesaver during downtime. Allowing the kids to use electronics for a bit can keep them entertained and give you a break.
  • Pools are Key:
If you’re staying at a camp with a pool, it’s a great way to let kids burn off energy when they’re not in the vehicle. It also helps them cool off after long game drives.
  • Simple Entertainment:
A portable electronic writing board (the kind that erases with the push of a button) can keep kids entertained with drawing, games, or stories. It’s light and easy to pack.

Safari Tips for Families:

  • Private Vehicle:
If your budget allows, I highly recommend booking a private vehicle. This ensures a more personalized experience and keeps the kids’ mood swings from affecting others on the safari.
  • Kids’ Meals:
Most camps offer simple kids’ meals, but be prepared for limited variety. Something like pasta with butter is common, but picky eaters may face challenges at times.
  • Wildlife Checklists:
Many camps provide checklists of the mammals and birds in the area, which can be a great way to keep kids engaged. You can also print one yourself before the trip to stay ahead of the game.
  • Photography & Videography:
If your kids are interested in photography or videography, encourage it! Having their own cameras (or GoPros) keeps them engaged and adds a sense of excitement. Plus, they’ll love showing off the photos they took when they return.
  • Guides and Kids:
While some guides are better with kids than others, we’ve found that most are great. In Brazil, our guide was in his 20s and hadn’t worked with families before, but he connected with the kids and had a lot of fun with them. It’s amazing how adaptable the guides can be!
  • Flexibility is Key:
Sometimes things won’t go as smoothly as expected. Remember, hakuna matata—it’s all part of the adventure. Be flexible and enjoy the ride!

Looking Ahead:

We’re already looking forward to returning to Kenya in February 2025, and can’t wait to continue exploring the wonders of Africa. If you have any questions or need tips about traveling with kids, accommodations, or anything else, feel free to reach out. Our next safari adventure is only 200 days away, and we couldn’t be more excited!
